After conversion in vivo to the active metaboliteÃ‚Â acyclovir triphosphateÃ‚Â by viralÃ‚Â thymidineÃ‚Â kinase, acyclovir competitively inhibits viral DNA polymerase by incorporating into the growing viral DNA chain and terminating further polymerization.
